Placeholder Red Grape

Abrusco

Fairly obscure red grape variety found in Tuscany. Often considered a synonym for Colorino but is distinctly different from the widespread Colorino del Valdarno. The prestigious and historical Barone Ricasoli refer to the addition of a small amount of Abrusco in their ‘Brolio’ Chianti Classico.

“Very earthy, with lots of dried violets, cherry and liquorice. Plenty of evolution resulting in a gamey aroma. Full mouth coating of dark, brooding fruit. The palate is beautifully savoury, with broard shouldered tannins. Relatively cooler year given the decade that follows, but still a warm and sunny vintage yielding a rich, ripe structure. Acidity is still fresh. This is an impressively aged Chianti with classical varietal depth and concentration.”
